Every business celebrates its milestones, but not many have served their customers and their community for 95 years like Strack & Van Til has.
To celebrate its 95th anniversary of serving shoppers in Northwest Indiana, Strack & Van Til is giving customers the chance to win a $1,000 Strack & Van Til gift card every day through Oct. 29.
“We’ve always been a company rooted in the community with a dedication to serving the local neighborhoods. This special anniversary promotion could really make a difference in the lives of our customers,” says Michael Tyson, chief marketing and merchandising officer for Strack & Van Til. “It’s our way of showing our gratitude to our loyal customers, many of them generational.”
Tyson says shoppers enrolled in the Strack & Van Til Rewards program are automatically entered into the sweepstakes when they shop using their rewards account during the promotion period. One winner will be randomly selected each day through Oct. 29.

Strack & Van Til came about in a deal between grocers Ernie Strack and Nick Van Til,
Born in Germany in 1904, Strack came to the U.S. in 1927, where he landed his first job as a farmer’s helper in St. Louis. One year later, he was hired to sweep the back rooms of a Kroger grocery store in Gary and worked his way up to store manager within four months, while he was learning to speak English. In 1929, he and a partner opened the Royal Blue grocery store in downtown Griffith, and their partnership lasted until 1943.
In 1946, Strack built an additional store.
Van Til was born in Griffith in 1912. His entry into the grocery business was as a stock boy in 1936, where he rose through the ranks and eventually bought out his employer. In 1954, Van Til incorporated Van Til Supermarkets Inc. and expanded the business by adding product lines and opening earlier in the day.
Drawn together by a common ambition to create a more exciting shopping experience for customers, the pair joined forces in 1959 to create Strack & Van Til. Inspired by the idea of creating a modern supermarket, they acquired 10 acres in Highland to build their dream. More store openings followed.
The rest is history. Today, the Highland-based grocery chain operates 22 Strack & Van Til stores, cornerstones of communities throughout Northwest Indiana.
