A square meal and a roof over our heads are things that some people take for granted. However, the reality is that food insecurity and housing instability are a challenge for many in Northwest Indiana. Strack & Van Til understands that a lack of healthy food and affordable housing is a critical health issue and that’s why the beneficiary of the grocer’s Checkout Challenge Round Up for the coming week will be Urban League of Northwest Indiana.

From Monday, May 6, through Sunday, May 12, customers across the Region can choose to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar when shopping at their local Strack & Van Til store. Those extra funds will be donated to the organization.

Urban League of Northwest Indiana President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Vanessa Allen McCloud notes that though the organization has many programs, the proceeds collected from the Round Up will support efforts to provide Northwest Indiana residents with food and rental assistance.

According to its mission statement, the Urban League of Northwest Indiana works to promote, encourage and enhance services to improve social, educational and economic conditions of African Americans and other minority groups in Lake, Porter and LaPorte Counties.

Dr. Allen McCloud says the Urban League serves approximately 10,000 annually with a variety of programs, events and support in addition to food and rental assistance.

“As president and CEO of the Urban League of Northwest Indiana, I am grateful to Jeff Strack and his team for providing this opportunity and supporting efforts that will improve the quality of life of all citizens,” says Dr. Allen McCloud.

Strack & Van Til continues its more than 94-year tradition of philanthropy by raising funds through the Checkout Challenge Round Up program to help organizations in the communities it serves throughout Northwest Indiana.
