Did you know that three of the biggest threats of aging are nutrition needs, isolation and loss of independence? Strack & Van Til is joining the effort to fund programs designed to address these issues. The grocery company’s next Checkout Challenge Round Up will benefit Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana and customers can participate from March 20-April 2.

According to Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana’s website, delivered meals can make a real difference for the elderly and help them remain in their own home versus relocating to a nursing facility. It’s not just about the food—it’s also about the connection. Studies show that when older adults have the right support, their quality of life is better, they spend less time in the hospital and they tend to live longer.

Merrillville-based Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana serves as more than a link to nutrition. They deliver up to 2,000 local meals per day or nearly 500,000 a year, provide visits with clients and conduct wellness checks in Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, Starke and Pulaski Counties. In addition, the organization prepares meals for the LaPorte County program. Meals are balanced and heart-healthy and tailored to help manage chronic medical conditions.

Meal delivery, wellness checks and a friendly face at the door are all made possible by the work of compassionate and caring community volunteers—600 to be exact—who help change the lives of more than 2,500 people annually and give their clients’ families peace of mind.

Customers across the Region can choose to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar when shopping at their local Strack & Van Til store. These extra funds will be donated to Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana during the latest Checkout Challenge Round Up campaign.

Chief Executive Officer Sandra Noe says that Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana is truly honored to once again be among the nonprofit organizations invited to participate in the Strack & Van Til Check Out Challenge.

“It warms our hearts to see how Strack’s shoppers lend their support to our organization by rounding up their grocery tab. This helps us to provide daily nutritious meals to our Northwest Indiana Seniors and other vulnerable individuals,” she explains. “Two weeks of Round Up has the potential to raise enough dollars to provide over 5,000 meals to our community. This is truly amazing.”

Since 1977, Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana has delivered nine million meals with a wellness check and friendly visit to seniors, other adults, and children throughout seven Northwest Indiana counties.

President and CEO Jeff Strack credits the success of the Checkout Challenge Round Ups to Strack & Van Til customer generosity and the commitment of Strack & Van Til employees.

“Giving back to the communities we serve is just naturally a part of Strack & Van Til’s culture. We are very grateful to our customers who contribute to these Round Up campaigns and make a difference in the lives of so many people,” Strack says. “Our customers are the best. They are the ones who give back to the community. Our stores, with the help of our employees, simply provide our customers an outlet to donate to some of their favorite local organizations.”
