How to Spring Clean your Refrigerator
Cleaning the refrigerator is not typically part of our regular routine. However, over time gooey jars or leaky packaging can create a mess in your frig. We all need a reason to remove the old food that gets pushed to the back and forgotten. It’s good to use your Spring cleaning time as a way to clear out and clean out areas of the home that often get neglected. Here is a three step process for cleaning out your frig that’s quick and easy.
Step 1: Make your own cleaning agent. To avoid spraying harsh chemicals on food surfaces make a mix of baking soda and water. Use 1 Tablespoon baking soda mixed with one cup warm water. This mixture will clean and deodorizer. For dried out spills use baking soda and a few drops of water to make a paste, then rub over the spill.
Step 2: Completely clear out your refrigerator. Use this time to check expiration dates, wipe off jars and toss any old lingering condiments. Once the frig is empty, wipe down shelves and drawers with your cleaning agent on a sponge or cloth. Wash surfaces with a clean damp cloth.
Step 3: Reload the frig and organize your foods. To prevent food waste and make it easier to find things, try to keep food in categories. Place dairy products together. Keep meats in the same section and have a dedicated area for fresh fruits and veggies. The foods that usually get lost in the back are condiments, so try to keep them in the same area to minimize the frustration of searching the entire frig.
